Enfield, CT - Carlos “Hernan” Ulloa
Carlos “Hernan” Ulloa passed away at Baystate Hospital on December 13, 2013 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Ambato, Ecuador on March 17, 1936, the son of Dr. Maximiliano and Lolita J. (Mera) Ulloa.
As a young man in Ecuador “Hernan” studied music, won a national writing award and was a published author. He immigrated to the United States in 1962 and was a dedicated computer science and bilingual education educator in the Springfield Schools. He retired from Gerena (New North) School in 2001 after an illustrious career spanning 28 years.
He was a chess player, martial artist, musician, painter and writer. He was a life-long learner and taught himself various languages. He was fluent in Spanish, English and French.
"Hernan" was a devoted husband, father, uncle, educator and friend. He was the last of the Ulloa siblings, who were proud of their children and of their heritage. He was a kind and gentle soul and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of fifty- eight years, Yolanda (Hidalgo) Ulloa , a daughter Myriam Ulloa-Skolnick and her husband Scott Skolnick, a son Hernan Ulloa; four grandchildren Jared Skolnick, Gabriela Ulloa, Samantha Ulloa, and Sara Skolnick and her fiancé Logan Hudson; and a sister in law, Maria Ulloa of Springfield. He was also very proud of his many nieces and nephews and his extended family.
“Hernan" was predeceased by his sisters Aidita (Ulloa) Cisneros and Anita Ulloa and by his brother Jaime Ulloa.
A funeral mass was held on Wednesday December 18th at St Mary’s Church in Longmeadow celebrating Carlos’s life. Burial was in Springfield Street Cemetery in Feeding Hills. Memorial donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St. Framingham, Ma. 01701.
