Obituary

CHICOPEE – Mary Ann (Shea) Fontaine, 73, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee, said goodbye to her family and friends on Monday, December 2, 2013. She passed into Eternal Life at Holyoke Medical Center surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving husband, Len, after a valiant effort to save her by their staff. She was born in Holyoke on May 9, 1940 a beloved daughter of the late Neil and Toni (Rys) Shea. She was raised in Holyoke, graduated from the former Saint Jerome Elementary and High Schools and lived in Holyoke for many years before moving to the Aldenville section of Chicopee in 1965. She furthered her education by attending the Providence Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated with a Degree in Nursing. During her early career, Mary Ann was a registered nurse and worked at Providence Hospital in Holyoke and the Willimansett Nursing Homes in Chicopee. She was employed for over 30 years as a dedicated visiting nurse for the Holyoke Visiting Nurse Association and retired in 2006. She was a member of the Chicopee Senior Center and, for the past six years, was involved with many of their activities. Active in her faith, she was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. Mary Ann and her husband, Lenny, shared 51 years of happiness and together they enjoyed traveling to many countries including Europe, Scandinavia and the Mediterranean. Mary Ann was a classy lady who was always in style and up to date with the latest fashions. She enjoyed shopping and especially loved to spoil her cherished grandchildren. Although her family and friends will miss her dearly, they can take comfort knowing that she is resting in a better place. Mary Ann suffered the loss of her beloved parents; her beloved brother, James “Jimmy” Shea; and her best friend, Dorothy Roach. Mary Ann leaves behind, to remember her always, her devoted husband and partner, Leonard M. Fontaine; her darling daughter, Susan Basili and her husband, Brian, of Yarmouthport, MA; her dear son, Daniel Fontaine and his wife, Debbie, of Hudson, NH; her cherished grandchildren whom she adored, Danielle and Christopher Basili, and Kristina and Jessica Fontaine; her dear brother; Neil Shea and his wife, Kay, of Holyoke; her sister-in-law, Patricia; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended members of the Fontaine and Shea families. Her funeral will be held on Friday morning, December 6, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her burial will follow the Mass at Sainte Rose Cemetery, 49 Olsen Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, December 5, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home.
