Obituary

ALBION CLIFTON DRINKWATER, age 99, died peacefully in Hingham on Nov. 21st, 2013. Born on June 16, 1914, he was the youngest son of Horace Rogers and Eleanor (Clapp) Drinkwater. He grew up in Braintree at a time when there was still land enough in the back field to pasture two milk cows and one temperamental pony.

Mr. Drinkwater attended Milton Academy and was a 1937 ROTC graduate of Harvard College. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was Commander of the US Frament, a destroyer escort built at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, MA.

He and Cynthia Harrison were married in 1942. The couple made Hingham their home after his discharge from the Navy in 1944. After retiring from a career in banking in Braintree and Milton, he volunteered as a driver for Road to Recovery and was an avid golfer and bridge player. "Brownie," as he was known to friends and family, will be remembered for his wry humor, resilience and deep appreciation for the beauty of Hingham Harbor at full tide.

He is survived by his son, Harrison and his wife Betsy of Enfield, NH, daughter Cynthia Clapp Drinkwater and her husband Clarke Pelz of Anchorage, AK; daughter-in-law Cheryl Drinkwater of Marion; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and oldest son, Roger Lee.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name may be sent to the Hingham Historical Society, PO Box 434, Hingham, MA 02043 or Planned Parenthood, 260 Elm St., Suite 109, Somerville, MA 02144
