Sister Dorothy M. Quinn, 94, of Boston and Winchester, November 19, 2013 after a long illness.
Sister Dorothy was born in Medford to Joseph and Ellen Quinn. She graduated from Emmanuel College in 1941, the same year she became a Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul. Sister Dorothy also received her Masters of English at Boston University and Masters of Theology at St. John's University. Through the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s she taught at high schools and colleges in Maryland, Washington DC and New York.
Sister Dorothy devoted her life to education and worked to improve the welfare of abused and neglected children in the United States. Most recently, she co-developed the Child Abuse Research Project at the Mass General Hospital with Judge Francis Poitrast, former Chief Justice of the Juvenile Court Department of the Trial Court. Sister Dorothy was previously Director of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Committee for the Prevention of Child Abuse as well as President of Lumen Vitae, a non-profit organization for the education and welfare of the poor.
Sister Dorothy is survived by her brother, Fr. Robert Quinn, CSP, of Winchester. Sister Dorothy was pre-deceased by her sisters, Helen Quinn and Margaret Quinn, both of Winchester, MA and her brothers, Dr. Edmund P. Quinn of North Andover, MA, William Quinn of Welleselley, MA, and Rev.Joseph L. Quinn, CSP of Winchester, MA. Loving aunt of Francis Quinn, Judith Q. Ulrich, Mary Ann Quinn, Dr. Edmund Quinn, Kathleen Q. Sullivan, Joseph Quinn and Patrick Quinn.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather at St. Joseph’s Church 68 William Cardinal O’Connell Way, West End Boston on Sat., Nov. 23, at 9:15AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM. Interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
