Louis S. Assetta “Lou” passed away peacefully on November 17, 2013 after a long siege of health problems. He was 71 years old.
A lifelong resident of Malden, Louis was the loving son of the late Guy and Josephine Assetta. Lou was the devoted husband of 41 years to Sheila (Murphy) Assetta. He was the beloved father of Lisa J. Porro and her husband Gary of Malden and Guy D. Assetta and his wife Susan of Windham, NH. Lou was the loving brother of Joanne Iovino and her husband Leonard of Malden and the beloved uncle of Joseph Iovino of Medford. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Lou was a loving husband, father, brother, cousin, uncle and friend to many. He owned Assetta Construction, Inc., a General Contracting company which was started by his father Guy in their Malden home in the 1960’s. Lou was an active member of the Everett Rotary Club, Past President, Treasurer, and Man of the Year. He was also a member of the Rotary Scholarship Committee and the Charitable Fund Trust. He was named a Paul Harris Fellow, an award for which he was most proud. Lou was a member of the Board of Directors of both the Everett Chamber of Commerce and the Everett Cooperative Bank as well a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association. He was a member of the Propeller Club of Boston and past member of the Malden Board of Assessors. Lou was always active in his family parish. He spent countless hours cooking sausages at the Feast of St. Joseph in Malden and worked many flea markets at Sacred Hearts Parish also in Malden. In more recent years he found his spiritual home at St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish. There he was an active member of the Vestry and both the Building and Restoration Committees.
Before taking over Assetta Construction Inc., Lou worked at the Record American, which later became the Boston Herald. It was while working at “The Record”, that Lou met his wife Sheila. Family was the most important thing in Lou’s life. He loved to laugh and to be around people. He was a great event planner and had a way of bringing people together from all walks of life. He also had a keen eye for design and building. In his free time, Lou enjoyed his flowers and looked forward to planting lush colorful containers every spring. From his front porch he could talk to the neighbors while he tended his flowers. A stranger was merely a friend he hadn’t yet met.
The funeral will be held from the A.J. Spadafora Funeral Home, 865 Main St., Malden on Friday, November 22nd at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Paul’s Episcopal Parish, 26 Washington St., (corner of Washington and Florence St.), Malden at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
