Obituary

Salvatore Anthony (Sandy) Galetta, 99, of Stonington died Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital just three weeks before his hundredth birthday. He was born December 8, 1913 in Eastchester, NY, the son of Michele and Perna (Carissimo) Galetta. He was married in 1941 to Mary F. (Grandolfi) Galetta. She predeceased him in 1981.

He was employed in the seafood business prior to his service in the US Navy during World War II. He then opened his own business, Sandy’s Seafood Market, in Hartsdale, NY before moving to Stonington in 1959 to work at the Naval Sub Base where he was a driver. After retiring from the Sub Base in 1979 he worked as a school bus driver for the Stonington schools for several years.

Mr. Galetta was a charter member of the Quiambaug Volunteer Fire Department and he was also appointed as Assistant Harbor Master for the Harbor of Lord’s Point.

He is survived by his devoted son Michael and his wife Lynda (Chester) Galetta, and two adored granddaughters, Michelle and Christina Galetta. He is also survived by a brother Peter Galetta, a sister Teresa Galetta and many nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he is predeceased by three siblings; Rose Galetta Duro, Jean Galetta and Nicholas Galetta.

During his final year his constant companion and caregiver was his devoted granddaughter Michelle.

The family will greet relatives and friends Wednesday, November 20, from 4 to 7pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Graveside Service with full military honors will be conducted on Friday, November 22, at 10:30am at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 575 Hillside Avenue, White Plains, NY.

Donations in Mr. Galetta’s memory may be made to the Quiambaug Fire Department or the Stonington Ambulance Fund.
