Peter J. Giammalvo, 90, of New Bedford died November 13, 2013 at St. Luke's Hospital after a period of declining health.
He was the husband of the late Frances R. "Jennie" (Caruso) Giammalvo.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Salvatore J. and Luigia (Costa) Giammalvo, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Giammalvo was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning home from the service, he joined his father at Giammalvo's Market. Mr. Giammalvo continued to work and grow the family store for 58 years until his retirement.
Survivors include his son, Peter J. Giammalvo, Jr. and his wife Rachel of Nashville, TN; a daughter, Catherine F. Hawthorne of New Haven, CT; a brother, James Giammalvo of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Rosaria "Sadie" Martin and Vita Carr, both of New Bedford; a grandson, Michael J. Giammalvo and his wife Dawn of Franklin, TN; 2 great-grandchildren, Alec and Lindsay Giammalvo; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Salvatore "Sam" Giammalvo, Joseph Giammalvo, Francesco "Frank" Giammalvo and Josephine Morra.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford Monday, November 18th at 10 AM. Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours Sunday, November 17th from 2-5 PM.
