Obituary

Augusta, GA – Stuart Holmes Prather, Jr., M.D., 89, beloved husband of 58 years to the late Betty Woodward Prather, entered into rest on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at Trinity Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the Church of the Good Shepherd with the Very Reverend Robert D. Fain, the Reverend Curtis L. Johnson, and the Reverend, Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating. Interment to follow in Westover Memorial Park.

Dr. Prather was born on September 29, 1924 in Americus, GA to the late Stuart Holmes Prather, Sr. and Ruth Council Prather. He graduated from Georgia Southwestern College at the age of 18. Dr. Prather went on to graduate from the University of Georgia for pre-med at the age of 20 where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, and also graduated from the University Of Georgia School Of Medicine (now Georgia Regents University) in 1949. He did his internship at Oliver General Hospital in Augusta and Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco. Dr. Prather began his residency at University Hospital and then joined the Army in 1949 as an intern and completed his internship while serving in the Army. He was called back to the service in 1952 during the Korean War as chief of Radiology at Fort Benning, GA where he also finished his military career as a Captain in 1954. Dr. Prather went into private practice in diagnostic radiology where he served as Chief of Radiology at Doctors, Humana, Sandersville, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, and Edgefield county hospitals. He was on staff at University and St. Joseph Hospitals from 1955 to 1997.

Dr. Prather was a member of and served as the President of the Richmond County Medical Society in 1968. He was also a member of the Radiological Society of North America, the American College of Radiology, the Medical Association of Georgia, the American Medical Association, and the Augusta Country Club. Dr. Prather enjoyed his practice of radiology, model trains, and collecting stamps. But he enjoyed being a loving husband, father, and grandfather more than anything.

Dr. Prather is survived by his sons, Dr. Stuart Holmes Prather, III (Lynn), and Lee Woodward Prather, Sr. (Karen); his daughter, Anne “Wren” Prather Moody (Robert); his grandchildren, Anne Prather McQueen (Hays), Kristen Lee Prather, Lee Woodward Prather, Jr., Stuart Holmes Prather, IV, Robert Goodwin Moody, Jr., and Lee Prather Moody; his great-grandchild, Holmes Bishop McQueen; and by his brother-in-law, Warren Charles Woodward (Jackie).

In addition to his wife and parents, Dr. Prather was preceded in death by his sister, Florence Prather Penman.

Pallbearers will be Lee Woodward Prather, Jr., Stuart Holmes Prather, IV, Robert Goodwin Moody, Jr., Lee Prather Moody, Warren Brent Woodward, and Gary Lee Richardson.

The family would like to send special thanks to the staff at the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home, and to the staff on the second floor at Trinity Hospital.
