Mary Jo Veal, 90, of Irwin County, Georgia, died Wednesday, November 6, 2013, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 AM, Friday, November 8, 2013, at Holt Baptist Church in Irwin County with the Rev. Dr. Danny Ray and the Rev. David Biggers officiating. Her son, Joey Veal, will deliver the eulogy. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 10 AM prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Veal was born September 27, 1923, in Irwin County, the only child of the late Carl Minor and Estelle Fletcher Luke. She was a 1940 graduate of Mystic High School and later attended Middle Georgia College. During World War II, Mrs. Veal worked at the shipyards in Brunswick. After moving to Ocilla, she began doing clerical work for Ocilla Oil & Fertilizer. She also enjoyed working part-time at Griner’s Gift Shop, Sims’ Furniture and McMillan’s Jewelers. She was very active in the Home Economics Club and along with her husband, Mr. K. A. Veal, they traveled to area conventions involving sweet potatoes and soil and water conservation. She was a very active member of Holt Baptist Church, was a member of WMU, a Sunday school teacher, worked with VBS and taught training union through the years.
She is survived by a daughter: Caroline & David Babcock of Valdosta and a son: Joey & Susan Veal of Ocilla; five grandchildren: Jonathan Babcock, Wesley Babcock, Valerie & Bryan Horten, Kyle & Valerie Veal and Kevin Veal; four great-grandchildren: Madison Babcock, Hannah Horten, Bryce Horten and Adalyn Veal. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: K. A. Veal.
