Obituary




Whitman – Robert T. Hanby, 97 died Thursday October 31 after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband for over 66 years to the late Jennie (Cummings) Hanby.

Born and raised in Whitman he was the son of the late Robert and Sophia (Beamish) Hanby.

Robert was a proud veteran of World War II having served in the US Army from 1941-1945. He had served overseas from 1943-1945, and was a survivor of the invasion of Normandy.

He was a lifelong Whitman resident, and after returning from the war, had worked for over 50 years for the DB Gurney Tack Company of Whitman, from which he retired.

He loved watching sports and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. He had also enjoyed working around his house and yard, but his greatest joy was his family.

He was the loving father of Robert Hanby and his late wife Doreene of Maine, Gayle Hanby of Whitman, Stephen Hanby and his wife Marsha of Plymouth, and Donald Hanby of Whitman. He is also survived by his grandchildren Heather, Cara, Bobby, Elaine, and Eric and his great grandson Xavier, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Elizabeth Hanby.

His funeral service will be held Tuesday November 5 at 10 AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Burial will follow in the Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held Monday November 4 from 5-7 PM.
