Obituary

Mary Feldhaus - Weber of Jamaica Plain, MA, filmmaker, writer, animal lover, friend, died peacefully on Oct. 6th, 2013. She was 73. Throughout her childhood in So. Dakota, at the U. of Minnesota and in Minneapolis she created plays, then began filmmaking. She came to Boston’s WGBH television as a Rockefeller Artist-in-Residence in the late 1960’s where her numerous works included the collaborative, award winning CITY/motion/space/game. Mary co-founded Red Cloud Productions in 1974 through which she produced/directed the groundbreaking Joan Robinson: One Woman’s Story, a 2-1/2 hour documentary about a woman’s living with and dying from cancer. This production aired on PBS and internationally in 1980 and received a Columbia-duPont Award. Upon completing this work, she suffered a brain injury in a car accident and could not work. She eventually recounted her struggles and successes - including with paintings - in “Excerpts from the Book of Sorrows, Book of Dreams,” a chapter in Willard & Spackman’s Occupational Therapy text book (1998’s 9th Edition through 2013’s 12th Edition). As she continued to live with traumatic brain injury, Mary was able to concentrate for somewhat longer times and focused on animal welfare, a long-time passion. In the early 1990’s, she Initiated a program to keep raccoon rabies from entering Cape Cod, MA by distribution of oral rabies vaccine along the Cape Cod Canal, a natural barrier to the Cape. This was effective and is a model which local and federal organizations continue today. Mary’s legacy includes those worldwide whose lives she touched through her work, friends and acquaintances who blossomed with her laughter and warm hearted connection, the many animals who found good homes, and young people inspired toward their careers by her words, artistry, and her passion for animals. A Memorial Service will be held at the Brady & Fallon Funeral Home 10 Tower St. (Opp. Forest Hills MBTA Station) Jamaica Plain on Saturday November 2 at 11 AM.
