Obituary

Diane Leatrice “Lee” McCool Weeks, age 85, of Mystic, passed away peacefully October 19th surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Hartford February 24, 1928, she was the daughter of Joseph M. McCool and Grace Marshall McCool Turcotte and the loving stepdaughter of William F. Turcotte. She was a graduate of William Hall High School of West Hartford. She held various jobs while raising her 6 children ultimately retiring from Mystic River Homes Congregate where she worked in the business office and organized and instructed the “Crafty Ladies”. She was also a loyal volunteer for the Child & Family Services annual Tag Sale. Lee was a member of the Ram Island Yacht Club with her husband Charles, who predeceased her. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and needlepoint and took particular pleasure in making things for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. As her illness progressed and dexterity became more difficult, she became a savvy “Words With Friends” competitor on her beloved iPad, drawing from her exemplary crossword puzzle skills. She continued to be a highly skilled, sought after bridge player.

Lee demonstrated remarkable courage and unwavering optimism as she endured continuing health challenges. She was known to her family as “the Unsinkable Molly Brown” as she rallied again and again.

Along with her husband Charles, she was predeceased by her son, Peter Joseph Viering and brothers, Joe, Butch and David.

She will be forever missed by her children, Chris and Dana Viering; Carolyn and Dave Freeman; Tidge (Cheryl) Copp; Marilea and Walt Bannon; Liza and Steve Bloom; Tom and Liz Weeks; Charlie Weeks and Catherine Dunning; Grandchildren Sean, Ben, Amanda, Shaun, Dan, Mylan, Alex, Julian, Samantha, Jake, Teddy, Annie, Jesse, Tony, Sammie, Leanne and Eli; Great-grandchildren Madelyn, Levi, Rowen and Audrey; brother Jack and wife Betty Turcotte and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend its appreciations and gratitude to the many doctors and nurses at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London and local specialists who provided extraordinary care and comfort to help her maintain a dignified and active lifestyle during her lengthy illness.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday at the Noank Baptist Church in Noank. A Celebration of Life will follow.
