Wayland: Eve Leslie (Biniris) Lucas (known as Leslie) loving mother of three and resident of Wayland for over 50 years, died Friday October 18, 2013.
She was married for 45 years until his death to Edward J. Lucas, an electrical engineer and CEO of Certek Corp., and President of Magnetic Corporation of America.
Leslie was a member of the Wayland Women’s Club, St Ann’s Parish, and supporter of animal rights and the veterans of foreign wars.
Born in St Louis MO, her family relocated to Burnley England at age 9 where she attended the Burnley School of the Arts. She later trained in Litchfield, Staffordshire England for basic training in the 10th Reinforcement Depot, where she was recruited as stenographer for SGS (Secretary General Staff) in Paris. She and her twin sister Lynn joined the WAC in October 1943. There were about 20 in her training group, all born in the U.S. She wrote "Crossing the English Channel was so rough we had to stay anchored for several days. When we arrived in the fall of 1944 at LeHarve it was pitch dark. It was a long and tedious drive from LeHarve to Paris in the trucks. We were taken to the Windsor Hotel. A few days later we started working for Colonel Ezzes." When they arrived the German Nazi flag was still hanging on the hotel wall (Paris was liberated August 26, 1944). During their stay in Paris they were often confined to the hotel as in Dec 1944, the Germans attacked in the Battle of the Bulge. They were later sent to Rheims until being honorably discharged to Chicago.
Upon returning to the U.S. Leslie attended and graduated from Washington University in St Louis. She later worked as a legal secretary, stenographer and court reporter. She was a notary public.
Leslie is survived by her three children Thomas E Lucas of Calabasas, CA; Cynthia A Griffin of Salem, MA; and Paul C Lucas of Sherwood OR; 5 grandchildren: Lucas Griffin, Francis Griffin, Leslie Griffin, Philip Lucas and Robert Lucas.
Visitations will be held on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte 30), Wayland.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 10:00 am at Parish of the Good Shepherd at St Ann’s Church, 124 Cochituate Road (Rte 27) Wayland.
Burial will follow in the Lucas family lot in Lakeview Cemetery, Wayland.
