Obituary

Margaret Newman Wheeler

Augusta, GA – Born in 1935, Margaret Newman Wheeler was a lifelong resident of Augusta, GA. She was a most dedicated, unselfish, and loving mother to her three sons: David Lamar Wheeler, Jr. (Kay), Barry Steven Wheeler (Cindy), and James Richard Wheeler; daughter-in-law: Cheryl Johnson Wheeler. She grew up a “tom boy” in the heart of Augusta, and at 4 feet 10 inches tall, she could do the work of any man. Besides raising three boys, she worked as a young lady as a “Park Lady” for the Augusta Parks and Recreation Service. She could play a great game of ping pong, and she coached Pee Wee baseball for Allen Park in the Frog Hollow area.

Margaret was an avid bowler most of her healthy life, and won the City Tournament for Women in the sixties. She consistently bowled over 200, beating many of her opponents including her former husband, David Lamar Wheeler, Sr. Mrs. Wheeler also loved fishing and always seemed to catch bigger fish than anyone who was with her at the time.

Margaret was also known to have an incredibly “green thumb,” and had an intuitive knowledge of plants and what they needed to grow and thrive. She was a passionate animal lover in that she not only had pets of her own throughout life, but she also loved and cared for strays and wild animals. Additionally, she was a self-taught artist whose talent was demonstrated through her paintings, drawings, and crafts.

Margaret’s most remarkable attribute was her sweetness and unselfishness. She truly had a “heart of gold” and it was evident to anyone who met her. She will be sorely missed by those who knew and loved her.

In addition to her sons and their spouses, Mrs. Wheeler is also survived by her grandchildren: Henrianne Hope Mixon (Jefferey) of Fayetteville, NC, Brian Wheeler of Augusta, and Brenda Jennings of Jacksonville, FL. She is preceded in death by her mother: Ruby Kelly Newman and her father: James Alexander Newman, lovingly remembered by his grandchildren as “Snoops,” and one bother: James Newman.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at 11:00 A.M. at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Margaret loved flowers, but if you choose, charitable donations may be made to the Augusta Humane Society, Inc., P.O. Box 12035, Augusta, GA 30914.
