Obituary

HOLYOKE – Viola M. (Majhor) O’Connor, 91, of Providence Place in Holyoke, formerly of North Kingstown, Rhode Island and a longtime resident of Springfield, died on Monday October 7, 2013. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born on April 6, 1922 in McLaughlin, South Dakota in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation, a beloved daughter of the late Gilbert J. and Pauline (Schmeichel) Majhor. She was raised in McLaughlin and Scappoose, Oregon where she graduated from Scappoose High School and later furthered her education by attending Business School in Portland, Oregon. She moved to Springfield to marry her wartime sweetheart. She was a communicant and Women’s Club member of Holy Cross Church and enjoyed volunteering with the Girl Scouts of America. She and her husband moved to North Kingstown, Rhode Island where she volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program and she was a communicant and Women’s Guild member of Saint Bernard Church before moving to Holyoke after her husband died. Viola was an outgoing woman who adored her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was a loyal and devoted Boston Red Sox fan. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Francis H. “Fran” O’Connor, who died on April 16, 2012. They were married on October 5, 1946 in Springfield and were blessed with over 65 years of happiness together. She leaves her four loving children, Kathleen O’Connor and Pat Fettinger of Deerfield, Patrick O’Connor and Maggie Vigil of Colorado Springs, CO, Barbara (O’Connor) and Cal Astry of Eden Prairie, MN, and Thomas O’Connor of Feeding Hills; her son in law, George Young of Virginia; her ten cherished grandchildren, 14 cherished great grandchildren and one cherished great great grandson; her dear brothers and sisters, Bob Majhor, Cliff Majhor, June Johnson, and Francine Howard, all of Oregon; and her many dear nephews and nieces. Besides her parents and her husband, she was also predeceased by her loving daughter, Mary K. O’Connor who died on March 21, 2013; her daughter in law, Patricia O’Connor; her four brothers, Joe, Jack, Clay, and Ted Majhor; her two sisters, Esther Pettit and Lorraine Andrehsen; her brother in law, Jerome O’Connor; and her sister in law, Eileen Moran. Her funeral will be held on Monday morning, October 14, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:15 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Joseph Chapel at Mont Marie, 34 Lower Westfield Road, Holyoke, MA 01040. Her committal service will be held on Tuesday morning, October 15, 2013 at 10 a.m. in the Committal Chapel of the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
