Cecilia Stone Campbell, 77, of Lake Blackshear, Georgia, formerly of Fitzgerald, died Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Crisp Regional Hospital in Cordele, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 3 PM, Saturday, October 12, 2013, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with the Rev. Dr. Lloyd Stembridge and the Rev. Rick Hamilton officiating. The interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until the service hour at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Ms. Campbell was born January 26, 1936, in Ben Hill County, Georgia to the late T. H. and Ruth Coffey Stone. She was a graduate of Fitzgerald High School. Ms. Campbell was very active in her community, serving as president of Fitzgerald- Ben Hill County Chamber of Commerce, first lady member and former President of the Fitzgerald Rotary Club, past president of the Fitzgerald- Ben Hill Arts Council and served as chairman of many area festivals. She was also former president of the Retail Merchant Association and assisted in the restoration of the old Fitzgerald High School. She was also very active with the Ben-Hill Irwin Technical School, serving on both local and state levels. Ms. Campbell was a proponent of Fitzgerald and Ben Hill County, even being called “Mrs. Fitzgerald” by many. She was a former buyer for many retail department stores in Fitzgerald and Valdosta, managed Stone Motor Company and completed her career as a fundraiser for the Ben Hill County School System. She was a member of Arbor Baptist Church, being active in the choir and a former Sunday school teacher. While living in Cordele, she attended the Warwick United Methodist Boat Church. Ms. Campbell also enjoyed her membership with the Jubalheirs.
She is survived by a sister: Glenda and James G. McKenzie of Cynthiana, Kentucky; two nephews: Marshall and Kerri McKenzie of De-beque, Colorado, Scott and Lara McKenzie of Columbus, Ohio; three great-nephews: Morgan, Colton and Holden McKenzie and two great-nieces: Harper and Parker McKenzie; one sister-in-law: Catherine and George Pierce of Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Dr. James Andrew Campbell.
