Obituary

Caroline Bingham Joss, born September 15, 1934, passed into Spirit on September 23, 2013. She is survived by her three devoted children: John Bingham Joss of Charlottesville, VA, Caroline Hubbard Joss of Washington, DC, and Elizabeth Forrest Joss of Pawcatuck, CT. Her three loving grandchildren are Rosemary Cathleen Joss, Forrest Christina Joss, and John Nichols Schadegg. She leaves two sisters, Cornelia B. Boland and Cata N. Bingham, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Caroline grew up in Washington, DC where she attended the National Cathedral School for Girls. She graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington with a BS in Education. She lived in Seattle, WA, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Pittsburgh, PA before moving to Stonington, CT, where she settled in 1980.

As the owner of "Just Desserts, Etc." in Stonington Borough, Caroline was renowned as a full-line caterer for the past twenty years. She continued to teach and serve as an enrichment coordinator at the Regional Multicultural Magnet School (RMMS) in New London, CT.

An active and engaged member of her community, Caroline was a founding member of the Salt Marsh Opera Company, currently serving as Guild Chair. Caroline was also an active member of The Herb Society of CT and the Wadawanuck Club. She enjoyed serving as Chief Communications Officer for WACCOs, an informal network of Stonington women. Caroline was also instrumental in making the McCort Memorial Garden (in honor of those lost in the Sept. 11th tragedy) a reality. She loved the arts, opera, animals, travel, bridge and flower arranging. Caroline's creativity, kindness, generosity, determination, style, wit and humor, caring, and love of friends and family is what she will be remembered for most of all.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Salt Marsh Opera Company, PO Box 227 Stonington, CT 06378 and the Poodle Rescue of New England P.O. Box 441447 Somerville, MA, 02144-0012 ([email protected]).

A Memorial Service in her honor will be held on Saturday, October 12 at 11am, at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Stonington Borough.
