HAVERHILL: James E. Daggett, 91, devoted husband of sixty-four years to Theresa L. (Amirault) Daggett and loving father to John, J. Michael and William Daggett, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Merrimack Valley Hospice House.
Born in Haverhill on April 9, 1922, he was the son of the late John and Maryalice (McCaughy) Daggett. Jim was a life long resident of Haverhill and attended Haverhill Trade School. He enlisted in the U. S. Army on March 31, 1944 and proudly served our country during World War II in Europe and Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He continued to support the military and its veterans and faithfully attended the annual Haverhill Veteran’s Day Parade and every five years traveled to meet with the squad that he served with. He decided to share his experiences while in Europe and Japan and authored a book named “So Long Ago”, available at the Haverhill Public Library.
Jim worked as a sheet metal fabricator at the Charlestown Navy Yard until his retirement in 1972. Jim obtained his real estate license in 1958 and was the owner of Daggett Real Estate in Haverhill for over twenty-eight years. He also worked along side his son, Mike the former owner of Seafood Etc. In his spare time he would travel, read, and play cards. He was a true history buff and had an extensive collection of military artifacts from the Civil War, Spanish American War and World War II.
Most of all Jim was a “family man” devoted to his wife and sons. He was always there for them and supported them in all they did. They will always cherish the memories of the wonderful husband and father he was.
The Daggett family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of the Merrimack Valley Hospice for their compassion and kindness towards their Dad. A special thanks to Hospice nurse Paul Proulx and Home Health Aid Noel Santiago for their care during the home visits with Jim. They are angels on earth!
In addition to his wife and sons, Jim is survived by his grandchildren, Renee Foye , Ashley Marr, and Matthew and Meghan Daggett; a great-granddaughter, Eliana Foye; daughters-in-law, Pam and Anne Daggett.
Funeral services for Jim will be privately held on Monday, September 23, 2013 in St. James Cemetery. There will be no calling hours at the request of the family.
