J. W. Williamson, 90, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Friday, September 20, 2013, at Phoebe Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM, Sunday, September 22, 2013, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ike Thomas and the Rev. Jerry Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mr. Williamson was born November 11, 1922, in Wilcox County to the late George Frederick Allen & Appie Paul Williamson. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy during World War II and returned home to work on the railroad. He formerly owned and operated an automotive repair shop. Mr. Williamson was the shop foreman for Rainbow Irrigation and worked as a machinist. He taught machine tool technology at the former Ben Hill-Irwin Technical Institute. He owned and operated Williamson’s Gun Shop, one of his hobbies being gunsmithing. A loving father and grandfather, Mr. Williamson enjoyed farming and being with his family. He was a member Dorminy’s Mill Baptist Church, where he has served as a deacon for nearly 50 years.
He is survived by his daughter and her husband: Bonnie Williamson Dugger & Stephen Griffin of Fitzgerald; his grandsons: Jesse & Christina Fletcher of Decatur, Alabama, Eric & Kristy Dugger, Brett Dugger, and Joel & Brandi Dugger, all of Fitzgerald, David, Jr. & Theresa Dugger of Long Island, New York, Chris Dugger of McRae, Stephen Griffin, Jr. of Fitzgerald, and Joshua & Tiffany Griffin of Dublin; one granddaughter: Nicole Dugger of Fitzgerald; 16 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Adele Land of Fitzgerald. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Evelyn Gaff Williamson; five brothers, and three sisters.
