Obituary

R. Carroll Roberts, 67, Ocilla, died Monday, September 16, 2013, at The Medical College of Georgia Hospital in Augusta.

Funeral services will be held 11 AM, Thursday, September 19, 2013, at Old Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Charles Tyson and the Rev. Tom Camp officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.

Mr. Roberts was born August 7, 1946, in Ocilla, to Iantha “Pete” Dean Roberts and the late Raymond Roberts. He lived in Ben Hill and Irwin Counties all of his life. He graduated from Irwin County High School and attended Georgia Southern College. He served his country honorably in the U. S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War Era, where he received a Purple Heart and was a rifle specialist. He was a former design engineer for Ross of Georgia for over 30 years. He played baseball as a catcher and also coached the softball team “Trouble”, that played in the ASA World Series. He was a member of the former Callie Garbutt Baptist Church.

He is survived by a son: Raymond C. “Robby” Roberts, Jr. and his wife Susan of Ben Hill County; daughter: Donya Roberts Tomberlin of Rochelle; six grandchildren: Sgt. JohnMarcus “J.T.” Tomberlin and his wife Jeri, Tyler Tomberlin, Abbigail Tomberlin, Anna Roberts, Amanda Roberts and Jefferson Roberts; one great-grandchild: Leila Tomberlin; his mother: Iantha “Pete” Roberts of Ocilla; brother: Harold and Judy Roberts of Douglas; sister: Debbie Roberts of Ocilla; one niece and one nephew and five great-nieces.
