Obituary

Americo B. Almeida M.D., age 87 of Fall River, passed away Aug. 29, 2013. Born in Arrifes, São Miguel, Açores, he was the husband of Shirley (Trent) Almeida and the son of the late Manuel and Maria (Bernado) Almeida.

Dr. Almeida attended Southeastern Massachusetts University from 1948-1952, graduating with a B.S. in Chemistry, attended Brown University from 1952-1955, graduating with a M.S. in Physiologic Chemistry, attended the University of Vermont School of Medicine from 1955-1959. He did an Internship in 1958 at DeGosbriand Memorial Hospital and a Rotating Internship at Charlton Memorial Hospital in 1959.

He received his certification in 1959 as a Diplomate with the National Board of Medical Examiners, and in 1970 as a Diplomate with the American Board of Family Physicians, served as a Preceptor for Penn State University Physicians Assistant Program from 1987-1991. His publications included ADVANCES IN RADIOLOGY, THE INCORPORATION OF 33P INTO LIVER PHOSPHO-LIPIDS AND RNA MONONUCLOETODES OF IRRADIATED AND NON-IRRADIATED MICE.

From 1979-1988, he was the Chairman of the Dept. of Family Practice at Charlton Memorial Hospital, 1989-1991 he was on the Portuguese Task Force at St. Anne’s Hospital, 1990-2001 the Chairman of the Dept. of Family Practice and on the Executive Medical Committee at St. Anne’s Hospital, 1990-1991 he was on the St. Anne’s Hospital Special Task Force Committee, 1997-2011 he was the President and Medical Director of Prima CARE, P.C. of Fall River. He served as Secretary of the Fall River Medical Society, was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society, American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Family Practice.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Alan Almeida (wife Shelly) of Foxboro, MA, Brad Almeida (wife Stephanie) of Pawtucket, RI, Lesley Smith of Fall River, MA, Susan Porter (husband Kevin) of Manassas, VA, and Lisa Gantt (husband James) of Farmville, VA; grandchildren: Brian, Melissa, & Lilly Almeida, Emily & Carter Gantt; his sister: Natalie Gouveia of Port Charlotte, FL; several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours for Dr. Almeida will be on WEDNESDAY from 4-9 P.M. with a service at 4:00 P.M. in the MANUEL ROGERS & SONS FUNERAL HOME, INC. 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, MA. Cremation to follow.
