BEDFORD – Edward J. Fahey, Jr., 80, of Bedford passed away on August 17, 2013, encircled by his wife and children, at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack after a brave battle with cancer.
“Ed” was born on May 29, 1933 in Chicago to Catherine and Edward J. Fahey of Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He attended the University of Illinois (Champagne) and Quincy College in Quincy, Illinois. Ed moved East to join the military and here met his beloved wife Charlotte (Fournier) Fahey at Fort Devens, Massachusetts. They married in 1957 and remained by each other’s side for 56 years, until the moment of his passing.
After being honorably discharged, Ed joined New Hampshire Insurance Company and worked as a Marine Underwriter until he retired in 1992. He also served in the New Hampshire Army National Guard, and attained the rank of Master Sergeant until retiring in 1988.
Ed loved his family by serving them always and faithfully. When not tending to their needs with wit and humor, he enjoyed cars, traveling, photography, bowling and exercising his unique talent to fix broken things and to make old things new. Ed gave freely of everything he had, and was one of those rare people who did what he said he would do, usually at the expense of his own time and interests, which he would -- and did -- readily forsake for others. His tenacity and work ethic were rivaled only by his hospitality and honesty.
Ed is survived by his loving and devoted wife Charlotte, their four adoring children, in-laws, and eight grandchildren: Edward J. Fahey, III, his wife Angela and son Bronson of York, Maine; Michelle F. Fortin of Bow and her four children, Eric, Brooke, Colby and Andrea; Todd C. Fahey, his wife Lois of Bow and their children Kieran and Dana, and; Craig M. Fahey, his wife Laura of Bedford and their son Jake. He also leaves two sisters, Susan Wagner of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and Margaret Hult of Largo, Florida and his brother, Robert Fahey, of Peoria, Illinois.
A funeral Mass was held on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Bedford, where Ed and Charlotte have been parishioners since 1967.
Committal prayers and military honors followed at the New Hampshire Veteran’s Cemetery in Boscawen.
