New Bedford – Everett Sykes, 79, of E. Freetown died September 1, 2004 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of May Ann (Thatcher) Sykes; they were married for 57 years.
Mr. Sykes was born in New Bedford, son of the late Charles E. and Alice J. (Wilson) Sykes, and resided most of his life in E. Freetown. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School. He was a U.S Navy veteran of WW II having served as a Signalman Third Class on the USS Arkansas in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and the European-African Theater. He was employed by several area banks until his retirement. He served as Town Accountant and later as Town Treasurer for the Town of Freetown. He played football for The Murphy Club, New Bedford, enjoyed tennis, golf, boating on Long Pond and spending time with his family.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by 2 daughters: Linda "Lynn" Sykes of E. Freetown and Deborah Jones and her husband William of Port St. Lucie, FL; 2 sons: Steven J. Sykes and his wife Deborah A. of E. Granby, CT and David C. Sykes and his partner Tom O’Brien of Dunedin, FL; a grandson: Captain Jeffrey M. Sykes (U.S.M.C.) and his wife Elizabeth of Temecula, CA; a great-granddaughter: Emily K. Sykes of Temecula, CA; and several nieces & nephews.
He was brother of the late Dr. Charles Sykes and Alice Torres.
At the request of the family, services will be private.
