HARRIS - Elroy "Shorty" Harris, 90, of Yulee passed away Saturday afternoon, August 10, 2013 at the Community Hospice Morris Center in Jacksonville.
Mr. Harris was born February 24, 1923 in Cogdell, GA and moved to Yulee five years ago from Fernandina Beach.
He was of the Baptist faith and was a World War II Veteran serving in the Pacific at Iwo Jima and Saipan with the U. S. Army. He retired from Rayonier 28 years ago. Mr. Harris was an avid fisherman and loved music and playing the guitar. He also enjoyed watching baseball and football and was a fan of the New York Yankee and the Florida Gators. He was a wonderful father and grandfather. He raised three daughters on his own and adored his grandchildren.
he was predeceased by a son in law, Larry Gocek and is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Wilhelmina H. Gocek of Lake City, FL, Mrs. Gayle Clark (James) of Yulee, FL and Shannon Dixon (Gene), also of Yulee; a sister, Ovida Cowart of Valdosta, GA; eight grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the Stephens Chapel at Green Pine Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 16.
