Obituary

Worcester—Joseph G. MacKoul, 72, passed away peacefully Friday, September 3, 2004, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rose M. (Samia) of 45 years, his sons Joseph A. and his wife, Gayle of Holden, and James M. and his wife, Eva of St. Louis; three sisters, Helen Isaac, Adele Metta, and Margaret Stewart; two brothers, John and Thomas; five grandchildren, Katie, Jamie, Alex, Chrissy, and Victoria MacKoul; and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Coury and Mary Mitchell; three brothers, 2nd Lt. Nicholas MacKoul (killed in action during World War II), E. Louis MacKoul, and Michael MacKoul.

Born in Worcester, he was the son of George M. and Melvina (Kurban) MacKoul. He was a graduate of Worcester Academy, where he was awarded a full athletic scholarship, and a graduate of Worcester Junior College as well as the University of Bridgeport, CT, with a degree in engineering. He was a veteran of the Korean War and retired with 20 years of service from the National Guard. He worked as an engineer at Rocker Dyne of California and Riley Stoker Corp., as an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance, and retired in 1992 as an assistant to the director of the Veteran’s Administration. He coached numerous local little league and Babe Ruth teams. He was a member of the Worcester Umpire Association, serving as an umpire for over 20 years. His greatest joy was encouraging, guiding, and fostering athletics among the local youth.

He was a very active member of St. George Orthodox Cathedral, serving in many capacities. He was a member of the choir for over 40 years, a member of the Knights of St. George, Men’s Club and the Church Council. He was in charge of the Cathedral athletic programs and received the St. George Meritorious award for his years of dedicated service to the youth. May his memory be eternal.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 7 in St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours will be held in the Cathedral on Monday, Sept. 6, from 4-8 p.m., with a Trisagion Service at 7:30 and also from 10:30-11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St. Worcester, MA 01604.
