New Bedford – John Alves of Dartmouth, age 88, passed away on Thursday August 8, 2013 at Royal Taber Street Nursing & Rehab Center of New Bedford. He was the beloved husband of Cornelia (Pacheco) Alves with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. He was born in New Bedford, a son of the late Rose (Perry) and Frank Alves. John was a proud member of the US Navy Guard and served during WWII, a member of the Holy Name of St. John the Baptist Church, bowled for many years and was an avid Red Sox fan.
His surviving family includes his wife Cornelia; 2 children: Michael Alves husband of Ann and Wendy Melo wife of Ricardo both of Dartmouth; 2 grandchildren: Madison Alves and Brendin Melo as well as several nieces and nephews.
John is predeceased by several siblings.
Mr. Alves’ funeral will be Monday August 12 at Perry Funeral Home, 111 Dartmouth St. in New Bedford beginning at 8:45 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Julie Billiart Church in Dartmouth at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will take place in the funeral home on Sunday evening from 5 - 8 P.M. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
