Whitman - Edward “Ted” Newcomb, 77, died Thursday, July 18, 2013, peacefully surrounded by his family. He was a man loved and respected by many. He was the son of the late Augustus “Gus” Newcomb and the late Ruth Newcomb. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marilynn (Dooley) of Whitman, children, Michael Newcomb and wife Diane of Whitman, Lawrence Newcomb and wife Michelle of East Bridgewater, Emily (Newcomb) Sullivan and husband Kevin of East Bridgewater, and Steven Newcomb and wife Kellie of Marshfield. He had one grandson, seven granddaughters and many nieces and nephews. He was also the loving brother of Robert Newcomb and wife Nancy of Yarmouth, Charlene (Newcomb) Ketterer and husband Jack of Plymouth, Marcia (Newcomb) LaRette and husband Richard of Iowa, the late Emily (Newcomb) Nagle, the late Wayne Newcomb, and Charles “Bud” Newcomb and wife Virginia of Marshfield.
Ted was a graduate of Scituate High School. He served in the Air Force and attended Morehead State University where he received his master’s degree in education. He coached on the college level for Morehead State University for track and field. Ted was the head of the department of physical education and served as Athletic Director at Whitman-Hanson Regional School District for 30 years and coached just about every sport including, gymnastics, soccer, football, basketball, track and field and cross country.
He was also an “original” and cherished employee for forty years of the Blanchard Funeral Chapel.
Ted’s greatest love was his family. He was happiest being with his wife, children and grandchildren. His other loves were gardening, coaching, viewing nature, food, pastries and watching sports. Ted was a man with a tough exterior, but underneath laid a heart of gold. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone who was in need and he was a mentor who inspired thousands.
His funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00 a.m. in the Holy Ghost Catholic Church, School Street, Whitman, MA. Burial will follow in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visitation will be held Monday, July 22, 2013, from 4-8 p.m.
