CHICOPEE – Eskil E. Johnson, 87, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Monday, July 15, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in West Warwick, Rhode Island on January 24, 1926, a beloved son of the late Carl L. and Anna M. (Nyberg) Johnson. He was raised in West Warwick and attended West Warwick High School. He left high school in 1944 and served his country during World War II in the United States Army Air Corps with the 3706th Army Air Forces Base Unit and attained the rank of Sergeant. He received the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged in 1946 and returned to West Warwick, Rhode Island where he graduated in1947 from West Warwick High School. He was then employed for Smiley Construction Company and Appanaug Print Works, both in West Warwick and at Rowley Construction Company in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He reenlisted in the United States Air Force in 1950 and served his country during the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was stationed at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, purchased a home and settled in the Fairview section of Chicopee in 1963. He retired from the United States Air Force on June 30, 1968 after over 24 years of active duty with the rank of Technical Sergeant. Following his military service, he was employed as an electrician at the former Uniroyal Corporation in Chicopee and the former Rexcel Company in Ludlow, before retiring in 1988. He was an active member of the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus and a Fourth Degree Knight of the Fairview Assembly 2670. He was also a member of the Chicopee Lodge of Elks 1849, the William F. Davitt VFW Post 625 in Chicopee and a former Hampden County Deputy Sheriff. Active in his faith, he was a longtime communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview where he served his parish as an usher and greeter. Eskil was a quiet man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Clementina S. (Fontinha) Johnson who was Called Home on September 22, 1996; his dear step-son, Michael Consedine; and his two dear sisters and eight dear brothers. He leaves his loving wife and best friend, Doris M. (Godin) Consedine Johnson. They were married at Saint Anne Church in Chicopee on June 25, 1999 and were blessed with just over 14 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving children, Mary Anne Freeman and her husband, Brian, of Chicopee, Paul E. Johnson and his wife, Ann, of Chicopee, and Douglas C. Johnson and his wife, April, of Ludlow; his loving step-children, Kathleen Deknis and her husband, Daniel, of Maui, HI, Steven Consedine and his wife, Glorena, of Chicopee, Eileen Hamm and her husband, Allen, of Pleasanton, CA, and John Consedine of California; his seven cherished grandchildren and seven cherished step-grandchildren; his dear brother, Donald Johnson and his wife, Serena, of Latham, NY; and his many dear nephews and nieces. His funeral will be held on Friday morning, July 19, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with United States Air Force Military Honors will follow the Mass at Saint Patrick Cemetery, 168 Fuller Road, Chicopee Falls, MA 01020. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday morning, July 19, 2013 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, 1599 Memorial Drive, Chicopee, MA 01020.
