Obituary

CHICOPEE – Robert J. “Bob” Vickers, 83, of the Aldenville section of Chicopee was Called Safely Home on Saturday, July 13, 2013. He passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family who were his wonderful caregivers. He was born at home on Sheridan Street in the Chicopee Falls section of Chicopee on May 3, 1930, a beloved son of the late Arthur and Florence (Gouin) Vickers. He was raised in the Aldenville section of Chicopee, attended local schools, and was a lifelong resident of Aldenville. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War with Company K of the 34th Infantry Regiment and attained the rank of Corporal. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Sharp Shooting Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Chicopee and was a well known area hardwood floor installer who worked for many local building contractors. He later was employed as a maintenance mechanic at the Springfield Housing Authority before retiring in 1990. He was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed hunting, fishing and vacationing with his family. Bob was a member of the Aldenville American Legion Post 337, the Amvets Post 312, the Moose Family Center in Chicopee Falls and a life member of the VFW Post 8203. He was a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. Bob was a quiet man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, F. Yvonne “Vonnie” (Baxa) Vickers. They were married in Virginia on May 31, 1956 and were blessed with 57 years of happiness together. He also leaves his loving son and daughter-in-law, Mark J. Vickers and his wife, Susanne, of Belchertown; his cherished twin grandsons, Kyle R. Vickers and his wife, Cara, of Chicopee, and Kevin R. Vickers and his girlfriend, Carrie Chevalier, of Belchertown; his dear brother, Kenneth Vickers of Chicopee; his dear sister, Ruth Vickery of Chicopee; his dear sister-in-law, Carolyn Z. Vickers of Chicopee; and his many dear nephews and nieces. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear sister, Dorothy M. Riley who was Called Home on December 2, 2002; and his dear brothers, Thomas L. Vickers who was Called Home on December 11, 2005, and Arthur M. Vickers, Jr. who was Called Home on August 3, 2007. His funeral will be held on Thursday morning, July 18, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial will be private at a later date. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
