Richard G. Ellis, Sr., 85, of New Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at the Oaks Nursing Center after a long illness. He was the husband of Johanna T. (Donovan) Ellis with whom he shared 60 years of marriage.
"Dick" was born in New Rochelle, New York, the son of the late Harold and Alice (Stemper) Ellis. He was raised in New Bedford, proudly served in the United States Air Force and worked at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for nearly 40 years until his retirement in 1990.
He enjoyed fishing and an occasional cold beer.
Mr. Ellis' family would like to extend a special thank you to the compassionate and caring staff at the Oaks.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his 4 children, Richard G. Ellis, Jr. and his wife Linda of Fall River, Steve Ellis and his wife Susan of Acushnet, Carol Elderkin and her husband John of Attleboro and Glenn Ellis of New Bedford; 6 grandchildren, Tricia, Kristen, Erika, Sara, Linsey and Falon; 4 great-grandchildren, Gage, Harrison, Greyson and Hunter; 3 siblings, Harold Ellis and Jeanne Frenette, both of California and Nancy Cardoza of Dartmouth.
His visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 5th from 4-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. His burial will be private at a later date. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
