Dr. David G. Jones, 82, of Marco Island, FL and Anderson, IN. Beloved husband of Sandra Blossom; dear father of Bruce Lewis Jones and Tamilyn Bakas (James Bakas, son-in-law); brother of Lewis E. Jones (Anne Jones, sister-in-law) and Bruce E. Jones; loving grandfather of Sylvia, Anna, and Katrina Bakas; step father of Cynthia Lee, TonjaTellman, and Anthony McDaniel, 7 step grandchildren (Brandi, Michael, Scott, Rebecca, Tara, Blanca, AJ), 7 step great grandchildren (Robby, Tori, Ashlyn, Angeleigh, Jessica, Isabella, Sebastian); nieces and nephews LouAnneNabhan (husband Doug), Sandra Brill, David Jones, the late beloved Brian Jones, Amber Star Volkman (husband Eddie); and great nephews Andrew and Brian Brill.
Dr. Jones was born September 26, 1930 to George L. Jones and Mildred Carpenter-Jones in Anderson, IN. His father, George L. Jones, was declared the youngest son of a civil war veteran. After graduating from Anderson High School in 1948, he graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1955, fulfilling his dream of becoming a doctor since he was a little boy. Dr. Jones honorably served active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a Flight Surgeonfrom 1956 through 1958 in Sondrestrom, Greenland, and then was transferred to Biggs Air Force Base in Texas. He then returned to civilian practice in Anderson, Indiana, where he also served as a Captain of the U.S. Air Force Reserves until he was honorably discharged on July 19, 1972.
Dr. Jones made many contributions to the field of Medicine throughout his career, such as using fish oil to prevent Coronary Heart Disease while working with Dr. Nasser’s group in the late 1980s. He was a pioneer in promoting the use of 24-hour Holter Monitoring to track heart rate and blood pressure recordings in his patients.In1979, he was responsible for making Community Hospital the first hospital in Indiana to be equipped with the 1010 Duel-Frequency Bi-directional Doppler Instrument, a device used to detect clots in the deep veins of the legs and to detect risk of stroke. He also promoted the use of cardiac defibrillators in hospital and community settings. He saved many lives through his innovative screening and preventive practices. Dr. Jones served the public as a Family Physician for over 32 years until he retired in 1989.
Residing in Florida after his retirement, Dr. Jones enjoyed over 19 years of marriage to his beloved wife Sandra Blossom. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, step grandchildren, and step great grandchildren, and was often referred to as “Papa Doc.” He always had a sense of humor, making everyone smile.
Visitation will be held at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S. Rangeline Road, Anderson IN, on Friday June 28, 2013, 4-7pm. A Masonic Service will be held at 6:30pm by Fellowship Masonic Lodge #681.
A graveside service will be held at Anderson Memorial Park Cemetery, 6805 Dr. M.L. King Jr. Blvd., Anderson, IN at 10:30am on Saturday June 29, 2013 with military graveside rites.
