EGAN, GEORGE M., 66 of South Boston, MA, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2013 after a brave stand against diabetes. George was predeceased by his parents Joseph & Jane Egan. George was one of 14 children; he had 11 brothers & 2 sisters. George is survived by his wife of 45 years, Marie, his daughter Angela & her husband Ed (Skawinski), son George & his wife Marianne (Gillis), son Christopher & his wife Lisa (Hornick) & his five grandchildren who he cherished beyond words: George, Caitlyn, Eddie, Sabrina & Jonathan. George is also survived by numerous nieces & nephews. George was born & raised in South Boston & was a proud member of the community. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Semper Fidelis Society & a founding member of the South Boston Vietnam Veterans Memorial committee. George worked for the City of Boston Veterans' Services for 17 years & retired as the Deputy Commissioner. Previous to that, George was an iron worker for 20 years. George served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968 & was a Vietnam veteran. George was a talented baseball pitcher for South Boston High & was even scouted by a Major League team, but decided to enlist instead. George helped organize & run the Annual Vietnam Veterans Memorial Golf Tournament for 20 years & was instrumental in starting the Annual South Boston Toys for Tots drive. George also donated his time & attention to numerous local community events & charities. George touched many lives & will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Visiting hours will be held at the Casper Funeral Home, 187 Dorchester Street, SOUTH BOSTON on Monday 3 to 8 PM. Funeral Mass in St. Brigid’s Church on Tuesday 10 AM followed by interment at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Boston.
