1923 - 2013
Marian Claire Tulos, age 90, wife of the late Dr. Alexander L. Tulos died on June 20th in Ventura. She was a resident of Ventura County for 49 years.
Marian was born May 30, 1923 in Alhambra, California of pioneer families from Los Angeles, Mendocino, San Diego, and San Luis Obispo Counties. She attended parochial schools and Alexander Hamilton High School in Los Angeles area and Taft High School, Taft California, graduating in 1941. She also attended seminars in optometry, ocular pathology, and economics at Michigan State University and University of Michigan.
During World War II, she was secretary to the Director of Supply, Camp San Luis Obispo, California.
She married Lt. Alexander L. Tulos of Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1945 at Mission San Luis Obispo, California. They were married 43 years at the time of Alexander's death.
From 1946 until 1948, Marian was employed as secretary to the head of the Walgreen Drug Company, Photographic Studios, Chicago, Illinois. She was office manager for her husband for over 30 years, who was in private practice optometric practice in Big Rapids, Michigan (1948 - 1964) and Ventura, California (1964 - 1982).
Her organization membership and activities were: Charter President of Junior Catholic Daughters, Court St. James, Los Angeles; President of Art Class, Alexander Hamilton High School, Los Angeles; Secretary-Treasurer Omega Delta Chapter Wives Club, Chicago Illinois; President of Knights of Columbus Women's Club, Big Rapids, Michigan; Charter Member of Big Rapids Michigan Friends of the Library; Secretary-Treasurer of the West Michigan Optometric Association Auxiliary; a two term president of the Michigan Optometric Association Auxiliary, a national committee member of the Women's Auxiliary to the American Optometric Association, Young Ladies Institute (YLI) San Buenaventura Institute No. 160 serving as President, institute deputy, district deputy, three term grand director of Young Ladies Grand Institute, parishoner Our Lady of Assumption Church former member of Rosary Alter Society and Women's Council, charter member of San Buenaventura Friends of the Library, member of Ventura County Historical Society, patron of the former St. Anne's Guild of Ventura County, A.C.C.W., retired officers Wives Club of Ventura County, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Poinsettia Parlor No. 318, lifetime charter member of Melodears and Ukulele Ladies Musical Group, and supporter of the World War II Memorial, Washington D.C.
She is survived by her nieces, Mary Ann Foushee, Paulette Hall, Theresa Maguire, and Joanne Shoji, great nieces Kristie Bushman, Laura Maguire, Sara Maguire, and great nephew Jasen Hall, great nieces and nephews in Michigan, great-great nieces and nephews in California and Michigan, sisters-in-laws, brother-in-laws, and cousins in Alabama, California, and Michigan.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Joseph P. Reardon Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Ventura. Rosary and Mass Wednesday July 10th at 10AM in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Ventura. Burial in Los Angeles National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions to the charity of your choice.
