Obituary

Augusta, GA---Katherine Havird Jarrell, age 96 was called home to be with her Lord on June 16, 2013, Father’s Day. Such a fitting day to see her Heavenly Father face to face!
Katherine was the daughter of the late Oliver John Havird, Sr. and Kate Melissa Bradley.
Katherine’s greatest blessings in life were her two daughters Kay Jarrell Pair (Charles R. Pair) of Augusta GA and Nancy J. Tumlin (Dr. William D., MD.) of Athens, GA. Her greatest joys in life were her five grandchildren; Lisa Tumlin Rhodes (John P.) of Augusta, Katie Tumlin Kirkpatrick (Steve) and Holly Tumlin Phelan (Scott) of Athens, GA., Jackson Jarrell Pair of Marina Del Rey, CA and Christopher Frazier Pair (Robin) of Portland, OR.
Katherine cherished her eight dearly loved great grandchildren; John Parker Rhodes, Jr., Sadie Nannette Rhodes, and Melissa Katherine Rhodes of Augusta; Lyla Katherine Phelan, Riley William Phelan, and Steven Colton Kirkpatrick of Athens, GA; Tallulah Kay Pair and 10 day old Ruby Savannah Pair of Portland OR.
Other survivors include, one brother, CMDR Lloyd B. Havird, U.S. Navy retired (Iris), two sisters; Mary H. Clouse and Connie H. Skalak and many loving and devoted nieces and nephews. Katherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jack G. Jarrell, one brother, Oliver John Havird, Jr., five sisters, Dora H. Rivers, Vera H. Bennett, Leila Havird, Helen H. Bryant, and Carolyn H. Usry.
Katherine was a lifelong resident of Augusta. After graduating from Tubman High School, she was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company. During this time she met and married the late Jack Jarrell who was manager of Big Star, a local grocery store chain. Later they opened their own business, Jarrell’s Curb Market which was a landmark on Washington Road for many years.
Katherine was a charter member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she helped with the many building fund raising events in the early years of the church. She was active in other ministries within the Church such as teaching of Children’s Sunday School Classes, Vacation Bible School, and enjoyed fellowship of UMW Circles activities, and Bible Studies. Katherine was a Christian and a blessing to all who knew her.
The family is especially grateful to Katherine’s caregiver, Terrilyn Dixon for her skillful, compassionate, and loving care of Katherine for the past 16 months and also to Terri’s assistant, Gwen Johnson who provided loving nursing care for Katherine. The family is full of gratitude to the staff at University Extended Care-Kentwood for their loving nursing care of Katherine during the past 7 months.
Visitation will be at 10:00 AM at the church immediately preceding the funeral service at 11:00 AM today Thursday, June 20, 2013. The funeral will be held at St. Mark United Methodist Church located at 2367 Washington Road with the pastor, Rev. Charles Broome conducting the service. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jarrell Pair, Christopher Pair, Parker Rhodes, Scott Phelan, Victor Skalak, and Meyer Skalak.
