Obituary

HERBSTAS, Lydia of SOUTH BOSTON, June 15, 2013 at the age of 103. She was
> born in Lithuania of a family, whose members include two published
> archaeologists, a well-known Lithuanian-American artist, and a former
> Lithuanian president. After much hardship she & her parents August and
> Augusta immigrated via Germany to USA following WWII. Ever since then she
> lived in South Boston where she was joined by her youngest sister Olga
> Daneris in 1957. In spite of limited means, both sisters provided
> considerable support to the scattered relatives in Lithuania and elsewhere
> until their final days. Lydia was the late aunt of Maximilian O. Baldia &
> his wife Christel, the sister of the late Olga, Eugenia & Greta, great-aunt
> of Keil A. Baldia & Max H. Striker, & great-grand-aunt of Justin & Alyssa
> Baldia. She is survived by family, friends and neighbors: the Herbstas &
> Valeska Families, including Ala, Arutis, Roma, Rita, Vaiva, Inga, Gabriele,
> John, Angela, Marcella & the Wilke Family, as well as her and Olga's local
> care-givers Rasa Morkevicute, Pranciscus & Niole Novosionskas, Jim Quirk,
> Kristine MacNeil (VNA), Nancy Ventura (Boston Senior Home Care), Won Lee, MD
> (Evans Medical Center) and their coworkers. Giedre Budreckis, among the many
> students from her Saturday Lithuanian classes at St. Peters School, remember
> her especially for the wonderful stories she told. Lydia was also well known
> by her family and friends for her creativity and artistic abilities often
> expressed in exquisite needlework that was exhibited at the South Boston
> Library. Visiting hours will be held at The Casper Funeral Home, 187
> Dorchester Street, SOUTH BOSTON Saturday from 9-11 A.M, followed by a prayer
> service in the Funeral Home at 11 A.M, and Interment Mt. Hope Cemetery.
