Obituary

Robert “Bobby” Govan, Jr. age 66 of Brockton, died Monday June 3, 2013 at his home with his loving wife Jean (LaFreniere)(Porrazzo) at his side. He is also survived by a brother Charles Govan of Hartford, CT and three sisters Roberta Thomas and Betty Ann Jones both of Brockton and Michelle Sturgeon of Pratville, AL. He also leaves a son and daughter from a previous marriage Robert Govan, III and Megumi Govan both of Andover. He also leaves many nieces and nephews and was the brother of the late Sylvia Govan Smith and Richards Nelms.

Bobby was born in Hartford, CT a son of the late Robert and Elmira (Armstrong) Govan and moved to Randolph at the age of twelve. He was a 1965 graduate of Randolph High School where he was an all star player and co-captain of the basketball team. He was later inducted into the Randolph High School Hall of Fame. He attended Trinidad College in Colorado and joined the US Air Force during the Vietnam War. As a sergeant, he served with a crash rescue unit during the Tet Offensive. After serving a five year apprenticeship, Bobby was employed as a pipefitter with Local 537 in Boston.

In his free time, Bobby enjoyed fishing, the beach and working out. Because of his love of basketball, he continued to coach and referee high school and youth league games. He will be remembered as a courageous and caring person.

Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton on Monday 9-10 am followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 am in Lighthouse of Faith in Jesus Christ housed at Central United Methodist Church 65 West Elm St., Brockton.
