EVANS, Ga. - Mr. Giles Milton Ellis, Jr., 97, husband of Frances Ellis, entered into rest on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at University Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Platt's Belair Road Chapel with the Rev. Greg Porterfield officiating. Burial will be on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 2:00 at Crawford Ray Memorial Gardens in Canton, North Carolina. He is survived by his wife, Frances, his sons, Kenneth Ellis of Augusta and Robert Ellis of North Augusta, his step sons, Col. John Holsonback and Dr. Gerald Holsonback, his grandchildren, Angela Brown of Asheville, N.C., and Amy Ellis, Noelle Ellis and Ryan Ellis, all of North Augusta, and a brother, Thomas Ellis of North Port, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou, who died in 1992, as well as a son, Giles Milton III Tippy, his sisters, Bessie Louise and Janie and a brother, William. Mr. Ellis, the son of Giles and Estelle Ellis, was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He attended public schools there and went on to the University of Alabama, majoring in chemical engineering. Mr. Ellis was elected to the Freshman Honorary Fraternity and to Tau Beta Phi Engineering Honorary Fraternity. He received a commission in the Corps of Engineers as a 2nd Lt. at the time he received his B.S. Degree in 1937. From college, he went to work for Champion Paper and Fiber Company in Canton, N.C. In December 1940, 1st Lt. Ellis, CE Res., was ordered to serve a year in the Army, and reported for duty at Fort Bragg, N.C. During the year, he was moved to Camp Livingston, LA. He was again ordered to serve a second year of service and after Pearl Harbor, continued his active duty. In 1941, he was transferred to the engineer school at Fort Belvoir, VA. as an instructor and later as assistant to the Director of Officer Courses. He graduated from the Command and General Staff School, the Naval War College and the Air Force School of Applied Tactics. In 1942, he was transferred to the staff of the Commander and Chief of the Pacific and Pacific Ocean areas, where he received a bronze star for his work. After the war was over, Lt. Col. Ellis was discharged from active duty, and retired as a Colonel from the US Army Reserves. He retained his reserve commission and returned to his former position with Champion in Canton, N.C. In 1948, he accepted the position of power superintendent at Southern Paperboard Corp. in Wentworth, Texas, which later merged with Continental Can Co. In 1960, he was transferred to the engineering department in the New York office. He transferred in 1965 to the Paper Division Engineering office located at the Augusta, GA. mill site, and has been a resident of Augusta ever since. In addition to serving as manager of Paperboard Mill Engineering, he assisted in the design and construction of major mill projects. He retired from the Mill Engineering Department in 1985 and transferred to the Augusta Mill to serve as Assistant Project Manager, retiring again in 1987. Following that, he was a consultant for several years. He was a member of the Technical Association of the Paper Industry, American Association of Mechanical Engineers, Alabama Alumni Association, the Elks Club, and the American Legion. He was a registered professional engineer in Georgia and New York.
