Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Madeline L. (McGrail) Raison, 89, of Springfield was Called Safely Home on Thursday, May 30, 2013. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Spencer on September 1, 1923, the beloved daughter of the late Raymond S. and Lillian A. (Bernard) McGrail. In 1926, her family moved to Springfield where she was raised and lived for the remainder of her life. She graduated in 1941 from Classical High School and then furthered her education and graduated in 1945 from Westfield State Teachers College where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She began her teaching career in East Hartford, Connecticut and then in Springfield where she taught at the Howard Street Elementary School and the Lincoln Elementary School on Chestnut Street. For many years, she taught 4th grade at the Samuel Bowles Elementary School in Springfield and retired in 1986 after 28 years with the Springfield School Department. She was a member of the Pioneer Valley Quilters Guild, a member of the College Club of Springfield, a member of the Retired Educators Association of Massachusetts and a member of the Springfield Library Readers and Discussion Group. She was a longtime communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church and a current communicant of Sacred Heart Church, both in Springfield. She was a loving woman who adored her family and showered them with her affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her husband, Neal A. Raison who was Called Home on December 17, 2008. They were married on January 18, 1947 at the former Our Lady of Hope Church and were blessed with over 61 years of happiness together. She leaves her loving daughters, Cynthia A. Amato and her husband, Marco G. Amato, Jr., of West Springfield and Janis M. Noyes and her husband, David Noyes, of Yarmouthport, MA; her three cherished grandchildren, Christine M. Morissette and her husband, Tyler, Marco G. Amato, III and Regina M. Amato; her two cherished great-grandchildren who were the apple of her eye, Lily and John Morissette; her sister-in-law of the Raison family, Ruth Carey of Niles, MI; and several dear nephews and nieces. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, June 5, 2013 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Springfield Street Cemetery, 1080 Springfield Street, Feeding Hills, MA 01030. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For those who prefer, her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to either the Thomas J.
