Obituary


Karl M. Huovinen, of West Barnstable and Canton passed away peacefully Monday, May 13, 2013 with his daughter & son-in-law by his side. He was 87 years old.

Karl was born in Quincy, and was the youngest of seven children. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1943 and immediately joined the Navy serving on a Floating Dry Dock in the pacific. After the war, he worked as a machinist while going to Fitchburg State University nights & weekends to earn his college degree. In 1967 he taught Machine Shop at Blue Hills Regional until his retirement in 1981 at which time, he & his wife, Beverly moved to West Barnstable.

Karl had a great sense of humor and many interests including boating, camping, volunteering, crafting and in his earlier years, skiing. He also loved anything to do with the weather. However, by far, his two favorite interests were travel & photography. He and his wife Beverly visited more than 30 countries and also camped across the U.S. into Mexico & Canada. He never went anywhere without his camera and many of his photos were published in local papers & displayed at art shows. Karl frequently volunteered at Cape Cod's local Channel 17 as a cameraman working on more than 50 of their weekly programs.

Beloved son of the late William & Hulda (Kantola) Huovinen. Karl was the devoted husband of 49 years to the late Beverly (Heap) Huovinen. Loving father of Karla Holmes and her husband Ed of Canton. Proud Gramps to Ryan and Derek Holmes and Karl's constant companion, Zoe, all of Canton. Loving father of William Huovinen and two grandchildren of Colorado. Loving father of Scott Huovinen of Florida. Friend to brother-in-laws, Sam Walkama of Weymouth and Fran Malaguti of Dennis. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Burial will be private at the Bourne National Cemetery. Donations may be made in Karl’s memory to Old Colony Hospice, 1 Credit Union Way, Randolph, MA 02368
