Obituary

Emma Holmes, 93, of Prosser entered into rest on May 28, 2013 at Sun Terrace in Prosser.

She was born on August 15, 1919 in Linton, North Dakota to Henry and Rosalia (Balliet) Schafer. At the age of six her family moved to Colfax, Washington where Emma was raised and educated. She graduated from Colfax High School in 1937 and then graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 as a Registered Nurse. Emma worked at Deaconess Hospital in Spokane and designed the first recovery room. On November 13, 1959, she married Walter Holmes and the couple made their home in Whitstran in Prosser and she became a farm wife.
Emma was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She served as a member of Altar Guild and as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. She also organized many Red Cross Blood Drives in Prosser.

Emma was an excellent cook and prepared and delivered many meals to those who were ill. She also made many baby quilts and donated to those in need. She also loved collecting Royal Delph China. Most of all, Emma loved her great nieces and nephews who affectionately called her “Grandma.”

Emma is survived by many nieces and nephews including Jim Pillers (Sally) of Prosser, Marianne (Karl) Newell of Waitsburg, April Phipps of Touchet and Erick Holmes (Kathy) of Honolulu; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by five sisters, three brothers; her husband, Walter, on February 13, 1997; and her son, David Crawford on November 29, 2012.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 31, at 11:00 a.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church in Prosser. Concluding services and burial will follow in the Prosser Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. at Prosser Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church.
