Obituary

Dorothy J. Goldman of Salem, NH, died peacefully on May 23, 2013 at the Colonial Poplin Nursing Home, following a lengthy illness.

Dorothy was born November 20, 1942, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, daughter of Dorothea and Allan Pollard. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Cyrus (Cy) Goldman. She graduated from Lawrence High School.

It is with fond memories that we say good-bye to Dorothy, a woman who had a penchant for medicine, teaching and more recently, genealogy and the preservation of history. She will be sorely missed by her friends, family and her “second family” at Colonial Poplin.

After her retirement of forty years in the medical field, Dot worked as a teacher of allied healthcare professionals. She imparted her love of medicine and exemplary techniques to her students at Whittier College and Health Career Training Associates of Manchester. After retiring from teaching Phlebotomy and Medical Assisting, she taught Genealogy, as well as facilitating discussion groups. She also worked at Parkland Medical Center in the Laboratory.

Her desire to remember the forgotten and preserve history, led her to the Derry Heritage Commission. She quickly embraced a monumental project of surveying and photographing historic sections of Derry’s Forest Hill Cemetery. This led her to her most notable accomplishment, the formation of the Friends of Forest Hill Cemetery, a group dedicated to the preservation and restoration of historic gravestones.

She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, and served as NH State Co-Historian. She was also a member of the Molly Reid Chapter, NSDAR in Derry, and the Gilman E Sleeper Camp 60 in Salem, NH.

There will be no public calling hours per Dorothy’s request. A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10:00 am at the Upper Village Hall, 52 East Derry Road, East Derry, NH. Donations in memory of Dorothy may be directed to Nobody’s Children, PO Box 1076, Windham, NH 03087, or to the Genealogical/Historical charity of one’s choice.
