Obituary

George Athanas, 87 of Somerville, died Monday after a long illness in Somerville.

Born in Boston, he lived in Somerville for the past 50 years and formerly from the West End of Boston. He was the son of the late Constantine (Anastose) and Louis Athanas. George was a Plant Manager at the Boston Sausage Company in Boston for 15 years and retired in 1983.He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy 1944 to 1946 as a Seaman Second Class. George was also a member of the American Legion Post 19 in Somerville.

Beloved husband of the Late Anna (Castiglione). Devoted father of Louis G. Athanas of Boxford and Karen Athanas of Somerville. Brother of Olga Rapo of Southbridge, Tefta Gilchrist of Chicago and the late Margaret Alexion, Arthur, Salvatore, Andrew, Paul and James Athanas.

A Funeral Service will be celebrated in the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD Friday at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8. Services will conclude with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be sent in George’s name to St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 381051942.
