Virginia Alexander, 87, of Fitzgerald, Georgia died Monday, May 13, 2013, at her residence.
Memorial services will be held 3 PM, Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Dorminy Mill Baptist Church with the Rev. Isaac Thomas and the Rev. Dr. Lloyd Stembridge officiating. Helen Cook will do a reading. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mrs. Alexander was born July 19, 1925, in Greensboro, Alabama to the late Edmond Asbury and Ruby Rencher Powers. She graduated from Auburn High School and attended Auburn University. A former resident of Darien, Georgia, she lived in the Fitzgerald community for the past year. Mrs. Alexander was an avid animal lover having opened her home to a variety of animals. She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. She was a member of Darien United Methodist Church where she was very active in the UMW and attended Dorminy Mill Baptist Church in Ben Hill County, Georgia
She is survived by her husband of 69 years: Leslie Alexander of Fitzgerald, Georgia; her children: William Michael “Mike” (Janice) Alexander of Greenback, Tennessee; Cynthia Alexander (Ray) Garner of Nancy, Kentucky; Daniel J. (Freda) Alexander of Fitzgerald, Georgia; Margaret Ann “Peggy” Alexander-Christie of Cleveland and Leslie Virginia “Ginny” Alexander (Kevin) Regala of Minot, North Dakota; ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. The family wishes to acknowledge the caring and compassionate service given Mrs. Alexander by the nurses and staff of Blue Gray Hospice as well as her personal caregivers: Mae Wilcox, Helen Cook, Beth Jordan, and Mickey DeWitt.
