Mary Helen Whaley
Augusta, GA – Mary Helen Adams Whaley, 88, died May 9, 2013 at her residence after a short battle with cancer. She was born October 4, 1924 in Elbert County, GA to Sallie Mae Warren Adams and Paul Simeon Adams. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, William Richard Whaley, her parents, her brother Amos Adams, a sister Doris Lyden, and a granddaughter, Lisa Pinnell.
Mrs. Whaley came to Augusta in 1943 to work at the Augusta Arsenal, later she worked for the Department of Defense at Fort Gordon, and then the VA Medical Center. She retired from the VA after 31 years.
She was a member of St. Mark Methodist Church and the French Bible Class, Senior Friends, and The National Active and Retired Federal Employees. She loved camping, gardening, and caring for her family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include her daughter: Patricia Pinnell and her son-in-law Rick Pinnell, her sons Kenneth Whaley and Alan Whaley (Nancy); grandchildren: Laura Williams (Walker), William Whaley, Ann Marie Scott (Ross), Dean Whaley and Abbey Sykes; great grandchildren: Mae Williams, Walker Williams, Witt Williams, Braydon Scott and Mackenzi Scott; a great aunt Peggy Saver; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, May 12, 2013, at 4:00 P.M. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son with Chaplain Susan Moss officiating.
The family wishes to thank the Trinity Hospice staff and her caregivers Beverly Manor and Desiree Martin for the wonderful care and support provided to Mrs. Whaley and her family.
