Loraine “Sandy” Farris, 88, of Fitzgerald, died April 23, 2013, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Saturday, April 27, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Fitzgerald with the Rev. Dr. Mike Ruffin and the Rev. Steve Hand officiating. Her grandson, Daniel Jones, will give the eulogy. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Mrs. Farris was born September 25, 1924, in Ware County, Georgia, to the late Mack C. and Ava Lou Carter Fender. Formerly from Claxton, she had lived in the community since 1963. She graduated from High School in Hardeeville, South Carolina and received her nursing training at Ben Hill County Hospital. She worked at the Medical Arts Building for Dr. Morgan Smith for over 30 years. After she retired, she kept children in her home. Being a minister’s wife, she was involved in all church activities including teaching Sunday School and singing in the choir. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Fitzgerald, formerly a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Claxton and Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Fitzgerald.
She is survived by seven daughters: Ann (Billy) Parker of Snellville, Linda Averett of Pooler, Lana (Leroy) Harvey of Savannah, Julie (Willie) Mobley of Fitzgerald, Janie (Jimmy) Grubbs of Fitzgerald, Robin (Ethan) Corliss of Fitzgerald and Cindy Tyson of Tifton; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; siblings: Chuck Fender of Huntsville, Alabama, Donald Fender of Killeen, Texas, Jerry Wheeler, Lois Becker, Doris Riley and Sandra Harrelson, all of Savannah, Wilma Bryan of Levy, South Carolina and Ceila Hunt of Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Rev. William (Bill) Farris, a great granddaughter: Arlie Blake Jones, two brothers and one sister.
