Obituary

Mary Josephine Newton, 93, of Westerly, died peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at home surrounded by her family.
She was born April 22, 1919, in Hardinsburg, Ky., the daughter of James Wright and Hallie Elizabeth Haycraft. Her husband of 40 years, Clarence W. Newton, predeceased her. They were longtime residents of Radcliffe, Ky., until she moved to Westerly seven years ago to reside with her daughter.
In her early years, Mary enjoyed golf, bowling and was a member of the garden club. She was also an avid bridge player, which she enjoyed up until the time of her death.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mabel Newton Payne, of Westerly, and Mary Cecil Brann, of Springfield, Ohio; five grandchildren, Hallie E. Payne, of Pawcatuck, Michael N. Payne, of Carnelian Bay, Calif., John S. Payne, of Westerly, and Matthew J. and Nathan P. Brann, of Springfield, Ohio; and four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Nathaniel and Raymond Haessly, of Pawcatuck, and Avera Brann, of Rome, Ga. She is also survived by her 99-year-old sister, Helen Atkinson, of Hardinsburg, Ky., and five nieces and nephews.
Mary's family will greet relatives and friends Friday, April 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm St., Westerly. Burial will be held at a later date in Kentucky.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Westerly Senior Citizens Center Association, 39 State St., Westerly, RI 02891.
