John C. Andronic, 91, of Worcester died Sunday, April 21st in UMASS Memorial Medical Center – Memorial Campus. His wife of 53 years, Maria (Banolas) Andronic died in 1999. He leaves a daughter, Sandra, wife of Dr. Nicholas Mazanitis of Worcester; a son, Michael J. Andronic, and his wife, Lisa of Webster; and five grandchildren, Atty. Nicole Mazanitis-Gorski and her husband, Alexander of New York City, Cristina Drogkaris and her husband, Vasili, Sophia Mazanitis all of Boston, Alexander Mazanitis of Worcester and Michael Andronic, Jr. of Webster. He was predeceased by a brother, Dr. Alexe Andronic.
He was born in Romania, the son of Constantine and Lucia (Stanescu) Andronic. John was a graduate of Bucharest University, School of Pharmacy. He was the senior researcher at the institute for antibiotics in Bucharest where he developed the patent for penicillin in solid form (tablets). After his family went to Greece as political refugees from communism they immigrated to the United States, where he worked as a chemist for Astra Pharmaceutical for 17 years, retiring in 1979. John was a member of Saint Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church in Shrewsbury.
John’s funeral will be held of Friday, April 26th at 10:00 AM in St. Nicholas Romanian Orthodox Church, with Rev. Father Nicholas Apostola officiating. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, April 25th from 5:00 until 7:00 PM in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue.
