Harry G. Volkart, age 68, of Mansfield passed away in the presence of his loving family on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton. He was the beloved husband of the late Carmen I. (DeJesus) Volkart, to whom he was wed for over 39 years at the time of her death on December 26, 2009.
Born in Hanover, Illinois on November 29, 1944, he was a son of the late Chris and Minnie (Bolinger) Volkart.
Harry grew up and was educated in California, Missouri. He proudly served as a member of the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. Following nearly six years of service to his country, he was honorably discharged on May 1, 1970 with the rank of First Class Petty Officer.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Volkart had worked for over 10 years as a Power Plant Engineer at the Massachusetts Correctional Institute in Walpole. He had previously been employed for 22 years at the former Mansfield Chocolate Factory.
A resident of Mansfield for the past 40 years, Harry loved spending time with his family, gardening and reading. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield and will always be remembered for his strong ethics.
He is survived by his devoted children, Kathleen Silva and her husband Richard of Cape Cod, Colleen Thake and her husband Dale of South Carolina, Maureen Ruane of Maine and Christopher Volkart and his wife Robbin of Mansfield. He was the brother of Harold Volkart, Geraldine Volkart and the late Larry Volkart and Kenneth Volkart. He was the cherished grandfather of Candice McKenna, Michael McKenna, Dylan McKenna, Sonny Diesburg, Haley Stansberry, Kirsten Volkart, Jacob Thake and the late Amber Diesburg. He is also survived by his great granddaughter Mia Plourde.
His Funeral Service, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Wednesday, April 24th at 9:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield. Burial will follow with military honors at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, April 23rd from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Harry’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Bethany Fellowship, 516 Newport Ave., South Attleboro, MA 02703.
