Eugene F. "Gene" Alves, a 2 year resident of Melrose and a former 51 year resident of Arlington, entered into eternal life on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at The Chelsea Soldiers Home in Chelsea following an extended illness. He was 89 years old.
Gene was born in Boston on November 11, 1923, a son of the late Alfred Alves and Ellen (O'Donnell) Alves. He grew up in Medford where he attended the Medford Public School system and graduated from Medford High School in 1941 where he excelled in football. Gene enlisted into the United States Navy on January 11, 1943 and served his country proudly and honorably during World War II. He was discharged honorably on November 27, 1945 with the rank of Fireman, First Class. Gene worked for several years as a laborer at a sheet metal company. He was a member of the Chelsea Yacht Club.
Gene is the beloved husband of 68 years to Eula (Scott) Alves. He is the devoted brother of Phyllis Powers of Lynnfield, Kenneth Alves of Florida, Claire Fell of Billerica and the late Edward Alves, Theodore Alves, Eleanor Donovan and Lorraine Agostino. He is the beloved Godfather of Paul Powers of Melrose and Rose O'Connell of Medford and is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Gene's Funeral Mass on Monday, April 15, 2013 at 10 A.M. at St. Michael The Arch Angel Chapel of The Chelsea Soldiers Home, 91 Crest Avenue, Chelsea. Interment at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne at 1:15 P.M. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, April 14, 2013 from 2 to 5 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose.
