Obituary

RILEY, George C. Jr. of the Back Bay of Boston, Osterville, and Naples FL, formerly of Needham and Wellesley, was born to eternal life on April 4, 2013. He was 88 years old. He was the son of the late George C. Riley and Sara (Cutter) Riley. George attended Mt. St. Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI from the fifth grade through high school. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1946. George attended the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth for one year at which time his father passed away and he returned to Boston to attend to the family business, Community Service Stations, Inc. George served his country during World War II. After enlisting in the U S Navy he was enrolled in the V-12 Navy Supply Program at Dartmouth College and Harvard University. After graduation from the V-12 Program at Harvard University George was assigned to the repair ship Medusa in the Pacific theater. George spent his entire business career working at Community Service Stations, Inc. George was President of Community from 1947 until his death. Community is a wholesale fuel distributor founded in 1918 by his father. Since its founding 95 years ago, Community has distributed Mobil Oil Corp. (now ExxonMobil) petroleum products in the New England region. George was an active participant in regional and national petroleum wholesale organizations. He was a founding member and one of the first chairmen on the Independent Oil Marketers of New England trade association. He was also was active in various Mobil distributor councils. George was a proud member of the order of Malta American Association. Throughout his lifetime he was very active in church activities. He had a great love of sports and was a dedicated fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. George spent 28 winters in Naples Florida. Summers were spent in Brewster and Osterville, MA where he enjoyed golf, tennis and sailing. George is survived by his loving wife of 31 years Mercedes S. (Savoie) Riley and was predeceased by his first wife of 26 years and mother of his children, Janet B. (Bligh) Riley. He is also survived by sons G. Christopher Riley, and P. Bruce Riley; daughters Sara R. Rutledge and Alison Cody-Fletcher. His oldest son Robert C. Riley predeceased him. George is also survived by his grandchildren Patrick, Sara and Murphy Rutledge; Samantha and Meredith Riley; Madeline and John Cody; Craig and Alexandra Riley; and Koki and Finn Riley. He was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. George will be remembered as a kind, honest, fair and loving man who was loved by all and he will be sorely missed.

Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St. (Rt.16), Wellesley, Thursday April 11 at 10 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Paul Church, Wellesley at 11 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours, Wednesday 4-8PM. Interment Private.
